“Axel,” a new show on ice by Montreal, Canada’s Cirque du Soleil, opens tonight at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit. The production features skating, acrobatics on ice, visual effects, and live music that integrates popular songs with original scores.

There will be six shows:

  • 7:30 tonight
  • 7:30 p.m. Friday
  • 3:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday
  • 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. Sunday

The story follows Axel, a graphic artist and musician who dives into his hand-drawn universe and falls in love with Lei, a keeper of a talisman and young woman with mysterious powers. The pair embark on a quest to retrieve the stolen light from Vï, a supervillain.

The new show includes freestyle skating, a fresh take that combines the skill and power of traditional pair, solo, and adagio work.

Axel is Cirque du Soleil’s 48th original production and its second show on ice. The company has 4,500 employees from nearly 70 countries and offers multimedia productions, immersive experiences, theme parks, and special events.
