Barton Malow, a large general contractor in Southfield, has started work on an expansion of its Field Services facility in Oak Park.
The upcoming 52,000-square-foot building will complement its existing facilities to further serve as the operational backbone for Barton Malow’s self-perform construction teams across its markets.
Once the home of its corporate headquarters, Barton Malow has had a presence in Oak Park since 1961.
The facility, referred to as “The Yard,” is the centralized hub that equips Barton Malow’s field teams with tools, equipment, and technical support. As the company has grown and diversified its self-perform capabilities, demand at the facility has outpaced its current footprint.
The expansion marks the first time Barton Malow has built a company-owned facility since constructing its Southfield headquarters 25 years ago, and is the result of a multi-year strategy to position its Field Services operation for sustainable, long-term growth.
“The Yard is the engine behind our self-perform work, and this expansion gives us the infrastructure to match the scale and diversity of what our field teams are delivering across the country,” says Kevin Zeleji, vice president of field services at Barton Malow.
With a summer 2027 completion date, the new building will include finished office space across two stories, with offices and conference rooms on one floor and a training center and print shop on the other. The rest will include tool and material storage, loading bays, trucking operations, and a maintenance area.

The site is operating under a state-mandated brownfield plan governing the responsible remediation of contaminated soils on the property. Through that process, Barton Malow has earned partnership status with the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE), which safeguards the state’s environment.
