Amazon announced today that it plans to hire some 8,000 people for seasonal positions across Michigan this holiday season and add more than 12,500 for full-time roles.

According to the company, these roles require no prior experience and start at $20 per hour, after Amazon announced a $1 per hour raise last week as part of a $1.5 billion national investment in higher wages.

The new hires will add to Amazon’s more than 21,000 employees in Michigan whose average hourly pay is now nearly $24/hour, and total compensation — factoring in benefits — tops $32/hour. Over the past three years, Amazon’s minimum starting pay has climbed more than 17 percent, according to the company.

The local hiring blitz is part of Amazon’s nationwide recruiting effort to bring on more than 300,000 people for seasonal, part-time, and full-time roles across its U.S. core operations nationwide this holiday season.

Among the benefits Amazon offers to its employees are:

  • A 10 percent discount on groceries and essentials online, 20 percent off in-store at Whole Foods — uncapped, stackable with Prime deals. Covers everything from produce to diapers and pet food.
  • Lifetime banking benefit at First Tech Federal Credit Union with no overdraft fees, no minimums, and no credit history required. Employees, spouses, and kids keep it for life — even after leaving Amazon.
  • Prepaid tuition up to $5,250 per year through 15 Michigan schools.
  • Health insurance for $5 per week with $5 copays.

“It’s rare for companies in our industry to offer health care starting on the first day on the job, but we’ve been offering that to regular full-time employees for several years,” wrote J. Ofori Agboka, vice President for people experience and technology at Amazon, in an article on the company’s website.

“Starting on Jan. 1, 2027, we’re excited to extend that industry-leading benefit to seasonal employees who work at least 30 hours per week. That means anyone who joins us in these qualifying seasonal roles now or in the future will have access to health care — whether they join us for the holidays or at another point in the year since we hire seasonal employees year-round.

“Eligible employees hired before Jan. 1 will gain access to coverage on that date, while those hired on or after Jan. 1 will have access from their very first day.”

New seasonal, part-time, and full-time roles will be posted weekly from October through December across Amazon’s U.S. operations network, with many seasonal employees having the opportunity to transition into full-time roles.
