The University of Michigan College of Pharmacy in Ann Arbor has opened its new six-floor, 142,000-square-foot building designed to transform pharmacy education, research, and collaboration.
Nearly 700 alumni, donors, faculty, staff, students, university leaders, and community members gathered for the recent grand opening and to celebrate the college’s 150th anniversary.
Located on Huron Street in the heart of campus, the new building is the university’s first mass timber structure, representing a major investment in sustainable design, innovative construction, and the future of health care education.
“This is more than a building — it’s an investment in the future of pharmacy,” says Vicki Ellingrod, dean of the College of Pharmacy. “It creates an environment where our students, faculty and researchers can advance scientific discovery and ultimately improve patient lives in Michigan and across the globe. Just as importantly, it’s an incredible space that allows our staff to collaborate and flourish.”
Designed to support both the evolving role of pharmacists as essential members of the health care team and the pharmacy profession, the new building features modern classrooms, collaborative learning environments, advanced research laboratories, simulation spaces, and flexible areas that encourage interdisciplinary learning and discovery.
Students also are expected to benefit from the building’s location between the university’s central and medical campuses, providing close connections to academic partners and direct access to the University of Michigan Health system.
“The impact of this space will be felt through every student trained here, every discovery made within these walls, and every patient whose life is improved because of the education and innovation that happens here,” Ellingrod says.
