Prime + Proper in Detroit has been ranked in the top 20 of the Best Steak Restaurants in North America by London-based Upper Cut Media House Ltd.

Upper Cut described Prime + Proper as “Detroit’s modern cathedral of steak and precision,” adding later “Prime + Proper isn’t just one of the best restaurants in Detroit, it’s one of the most exacting steak restaurants in America, where legacy butchery meets modern hospitality and where every steak tells a story of patience, fire and finesse.”

The listing, developed annually, covers the U.S. and Canada, and Prime + Proper was the only Michigan restaurant to make the top 50. It also came in at No. 69 on the World’s 101 Best Steak Restaurants. In all, 450 restaurants in North America were considered and 1,200 globally.

The restaurant, located in Detroit’s Capitol Park, opened in 2017 and has been garnering awards seemingly from the start, including Hour magazine’s Restaurant of the Year in 2019. Located in the 11-story Capitol Park Loft building, it will be joined next year by a location in Nashville.

When it opens early next year in the Grand Hyatt Nashville in Nashville Yards, it’ll be one of several upper-end Michigan-based restaurants that have expanded to Music City. Like its Detroit sibling, it will have in-house butchery and a dry-aging program.

Prime + Proper is part of the Heirloom Hospitality group which operates five restaurants in Detroit, Troy, and Birmingham. They include Townhouse Detroit, Townhouse Birmingham, as well as Mad Nice in midtown Detroit and Mad Nice Coffee in Detroit and Troy.
