Magna International, a Canadian automotive supplier with several operations in metro Detroit, has confirmed that it is planning to build a $100 million plant in Auburn Hills to supply seats for General Motors Co. electric vehicles.
“We are working with the city of Auburn Hills and the state of Michigan on a potential new facility that would ultimately supply GM’s Lake Orion Assembly Plant and Factory Zero,” says Tracy Fuerst, vice president of corporate communications at Magna. “With this planned facility we would expect to bring in roughly 500 new jobs.”
The facility would replace the former Oakland County Animal Shelter and Pet Adoption Center at 1700 Brown Road (northeast of the I-75 and Lapeer Road exit). Construction is expected to begin this summer and be completed in late fall 2024.
Oakland County Planning Commission documents say the proposed Magna facility would be the “exclusive supplier of seating” for vehicles being produced at GM’s Orion plant, which is located just north of the site.
The new project will offer 280,000 square feet, with 85,000 square feet of warehouse space, 165,000 square feet of shop space, and 30,000 square feet of office space. It will have nearly 600 parking spaces.
