Detroit-based Gage Cannabis Co. plans to open Cookies, a new flagship cannabis provisioning center, on Jan. 31 at 6030 E. Eight Mile Road in Detroit. The store will be operated by Gage in an exclusive partnership with California-based Cookies.

Berner, a rapper as well as founder and CEO of Cookies, and his partner, Jigga, a cannabis cultivator and breeder, started Cookies. Berner will be in Detroit for the opening.

“To me, Michigan is one of the biggest markets next to California,” says Berner. “Not only is it a big market, Michigan is a very educated market when it comes to herb and hash. They have been seeing California weed on the black market for years and been producers of high-quality flower in their own respective market.”

The store will carry Cookies products including the Cookies, Lemonnade, Runtz, PowerzzzUp, Minntz and Grandiflora lines.

The 3,500-square-foot store is expected to employ 40 Detroiters. Gage also has a social equity program that will share $950,000 with social equity participants in cities it determines are “disproportionately impacted by marijuana prohibition.” The company plans to give up to $50,000 to prospective cannabis business owners in each of the 19 social equity cities initially designated by the Michigan Marijuana Regulatory Agency. The Detroit award recipient has yet to be selected. Gage expects to meet potential candidates at the opening.

In addition to the new center, Gage plans to dedicate shelf space to Cookies products in its current locations in Ferndale and Adrian, as well as soon-to-open locations in Lansing, Kalamazoo, Battle Creek, Bay City, Grand Rapids, Traverse City, Centerline, and others.

Cookies was founded in 2012 and operates two flagship stores in Los Angeles and two new locations in the Bay Area.

Gage operates more than 150,000 square feet of cultivation space and a processing facility to supply its 13 provisioning centers.
