Detroit-based Atwater Brewery’s Lager took first place in the Light Lager and Pilsner categories at the 20th annual World Expo of Beer competition held in Frankenmuth.

More than 566 entries competed in this year’s event, Michigan’s only international competitive beer event.

“Sweeping the lager categories is especially gratifying because our brewery was founded on world-class lagers,” says Mark Rieth, owner of Atwater Brewery, located near Stroh River Place. “With lagers continuing as the nation’s fastest growing craft beer segment, it feels like the market is coming our way, and winning beer competitions is an important endorsement.”

The Detroit brewer also took third place honors in both categories with its Cash for Gold and Purple Gang Pilsner, respectively.

This year’s World Expo of Beer attracted 15,000 beer fans and beers from at least 70 different breweries.

Atwater Brewery expanded its operations to Texas in March. In December 2015, the brewery introduced three new flavors — a grapefruit session ale, a rye malt, and an imperial bock — along with new branding designed by Detroit artist Tony Roko.
