Farmington Hills-based City Club Apartments broke ground today on City Club Apartments — CBD Detroit, a mixed-use apartment, furnished short-term, and penthouse community. The project is located at the corner of Washington Boulevard and Park Avenue facing Grand Circus Park, just west of the David Whitney Building.
The site was once home to the historic 18-floor, 800-room Statler Hotel. Built in 1915, the Statler Hotel saw a variety of business, sports, entertainment, and political guests before it was demolished in 2005. It’s massive American and Michigan flags, set on the roof, were a draw for horse-drawn carriages and automobiles.
“This is a site of great historical significance and we take seriously our responsibility to deliver a special community to the city,” says Jonathan Holtzman, chairman and CEO of City Club Apartments. “Unfortunately, the beautiful building was torn down in 2005. We cannot bring it back, but we plan to celebrate its great history while making our own.”
City Club Apartments — CBD Detroit will feature 288 apartments and penthouses, along with 13,000 square feet of street level space including a pet store, a restaurant, and a gourmet market. Other amenities will include: movie theatres, social programming, valet and on-site underground parking, 24/7 concierge services, and wellness and exercise rooms.
“City Club Apartments — CBD Detroit will combine the service and amenities of a five-star hotel with engaging and connected urban apartment living,” says Holtzman. “The look and feel both inside and out will be stunning. We will integrate advanced and high-speed fiber technologies and we will be immersed in the city of Detroit, as we have been since our company was founded here nearly 100 years ago.”
City Club Apartment and Penthouse communities feature four distinct finish packages and are located in neighborhoods with access to public transportation, arts and culture, sporting venues, parks and trails, retail, restaurants, and central business districts.
“When the Statler Hotel came down over a decade ago, we lost a great building on one of the most exclusive corners downtown,” said Mayor Mike Duggan. “Now, thanks to City Club Apartments and our partners at the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation, this corner will be redeveloped in a way that will allow Detroiters of a range of income levels to call it home.”
Construction on City Club Apartments — CBD Detroit began in September with pre-leasing scheduled to begin this May. The first residents are slated to move in this November with a completion target of the second quarter of 2019.
