The Papas family, owners of The Atheneum Suite Hotel and Conference Center in Detroit’s Greektown, are betting big on Greektown’s future with a significant renovation project, slated for completion in May 2023.
The renovation, overseen by St. Clair Shores-based design firm Olon Interior, includes the hotel’s lobby, bar, restaurant, and all 173 guest suites. The cost of the renovation was not disclosed.
“We are completely invested in and remain dedicated to the Greektown area,” says Athina Papas, an executive at The Atheneum Suite Hotel. “The Atheneum offers a unique guest experience due to our dedicated staff and great location, which will only be elevated with this renovation.”
The hotel’s suites are receiving\e a complete makeover with new furnishings, carpeting, lighting, wall coverings, artwork, and linens, as well as all-new in-room amenities. Carpet and flooring in the hotel’s hallways also are being replaced.
As part of the renovation and now completed is Atheneum’s A Bar and Lounge, located in the lobby and offering specialty cocktails, wine, and a bar menu. The space received new furnishings, while Symposia, a new fine-dining Mediterranean restaurant, was opened last October.
Originally home to the D.M. Ferry Seed Co., the building was designed by George Mason and constructed in the 1920s by Walbridge Aldinger Co. The Papas family converted the building into The Atheneum Suite Hotel in the early 1990s. The full history of the transformation may be found here.
The last renovation for The Atheneum Suite Hotel and Conference Center was in 2016 that included updates to the carpeting, lobby furnishings, and all meeting rooms.
