The Alliance of Area Business Publications has named DBusiness the “Best Magazine” for 2011 in the organization’s annual Editorial Excellence Awards competition announced in late June. The magazine won four other honors, including top awards for writing and design.
The judges from the Missouri School of Journalism noted: “The energy and pacing are hallmarks of [DBusiness], with strong story selection in its features and departments, essays, and columns.” The national competition was based on work in the 2010 calendar year.
In addition to “Best Magazine,” DBusiness garnered a Gold Medal for overall design citing the work of art director, Jessica Decker, and assistant art director, Megan Dekok. “The excellent content is offered to readers with strong visuals, including excellent photography, helpful tabular information, and eye-pleasing layouts. The entire package is one that encourages readers to lean back and spend some time.”
Other Gold Medals went to DBusiness writer Norm Sinclair in two categories; Best Body of Work by a Single Writer as well as Best Explanatory Journalism (the latter an exclusive report on the inside turmoil that led to Kmart’s bankruptcy in January 2002). Judges cited Sinclair for his “great sourcing and fast-paced narrative that made for compelling reads.”
A Silver Medal was awarded to Decker, photographer Roy Ritchie, and stylist Taryn Bickley for the design layout of the Top 60 Business-Friendly Restaurants in metro Detroit.
