Fashion… in Detroit?

When you think of Michigan and entertainment, what first comes to mind? Is it music? Sports? Stage? Maybe it’s the emerging film industry that has brought with it countless opportunities for film development and economic stimulus? While those are definitely some standouts on the Michigan entertainment front, what is in store for our state next might surprise you. Soon, when someone says Detroit, you’ll be thinking music, sports, movies … and fashion.

Not traditionally thought of as a hot spot for design, a hard-hitting handful of top fashion executives and players in the industry are about to invoke change. Birmingham native Joe Faris is spearheading the first-ever Fashion in Detroit (FID), a two-day, high-fashion runway event that will feature the works of some of the most esteemed and respected Michigan, national, and international designers, as well as creative submissions from local design students.

You might remember Joe from Bravo’s hit series Project Runway when, in Season 5, he was a top-six finalist. Now with eye-turning lines of his own, Joe envisions an event for his home state that would place a national spotlight on Detroit fashion and celebrate it as a frontrunner in design.

The iGroup is proud to provide FID with all of the models that will showcase designer lines. For 15 years, we have represented the best in Michigan’s model and talent and are excited to extend our services from print, film, and commercials to the runway. Along with tapping into our exclusive modeling talent pool, the agency will hold an open casting call to discover and place some new models on the runway for FID. The iGroup will also sign and assist all selected models with their modeling career.

Open to the public, the call will be this Thursday, September 3, 2009 from noon to 4 p.m. and from 5 to 9 p.m. at Stage 3 Productions in Warren, Mich.

Fashion may now seem uncharacteristic of Michigan industry, but Fashion in Detroit will usher in a new era for design and entertainment in the state. Every day there are opportunities for models and designers to execute designs that inspire, challenge, and progress our culture of expression and fashion. As a talent agent, it is truly an honor to assist in discovering the models that will be major contributors to its growth.

FID will take place at the Detroit Zoo on October 1-2, 2009, and feature 12 fashion shows, music from local Detroit acts, a VIP private reception, an afterglow bash, and countless other alluring distractions, making it a justifiable rival for the New York and Los Angeles Fashion Weeks.
