BlueWillow Biologics in Ann Arbor has developed a nasal antiseptic called NanoBio Protect that is expected to protect health care workers most at risk during the COVID-19 pandemic.
NanoBio Protect uses patented nanodroplets in conjunction with an active antiseptic that is designed to target and kill germs. The nanodroplets enhance the antiseptic’s antimicrobial activity, optimizing its ability to kill germs on the skin.
According to a study released by the World Economic Forum, dental hygienists and respiratory therapy technicians are most likely health care workers to contract respiratory infections.
The study, which leveraged data from the U.S. Department of Labor to determine the occupations with the highest probability of exposure to infection, shows that dental hygienists are at the highest risk of infection with a score of 99.7 out of 100. Respiratory therapy technicians were next with a score of 95.
The research evaluated data based on the following criteria: contact with others, physical proximity to others, and exposure to disease and infection.
“I work at a busy periodontal dental practice,” says Kathleen O’Connor, Philadelphia-based dental hygienist says. “We deal with patients without masks who are 12 inches or less from our faces, creating aerosol, so we open ourselves up to the risk of infection every day.
