As a certified Mobility Mentoring® Practitioner Organization, COTS will be able to support even more families in Detroit.

We are approaching the end of the year, and not all endings are somber. Now is a time of joy, reflection, and celebration of overcoming all challenges, and this year, COTS has a multitude of heartwarming achievements and milestones that ignite hope for new beginnings. Since the start of 2023, COTS has worked with over 250 families, including 446 children, providing essential services and support along their journey toward stability and self-sufficiency. This year has been an amazing testament to the collective efforts, dedication, and generosity of individuals within the COTS community.

Empowering Families: Passport to Self-Sufficiency™ Framework

One notable achievement for COTS in 2023 is becoming the first organization to receive certification in Mobility Mentoring® a research-backed economic mobility coaching method designed by Economic Mobility Pathways (EMPath). This certification marks a significant milestone, deepening our impact on the community by guiding families toward economic self-sufficiency through our innovative Passport to Self-Sufficiency™ framework. By implementing Mobility Mentoring® exactly as EMPath intended, we ensure our coaches provide the gold standard of support to families, ultimately fostering positive change.

This certification not only enhances the effectiveness of the support provided to families but also allows COTS to engage more families in Detroit. The collaboration with EMPath creates a powerful synergy, enabling continuous improvement and ensuring we remain focused at the forefront of helping families overcome obstacles and achieve lasting success.

Inspiring Stories: Cynthia Talley’s Journey of Overcoming

One shining star of the transformative power of the COTS PTS framework is Cynthia Talley. From her early years growing up with her grandmother to surviving a difficult domestic violence situation and experiencing homelessness, Cynthia’s story is one of remarkable overcomings and growth. Through her journey, she found a sense of belonging at COTS, a place that provided not just shelter but also a supportive community dedicated to helping her and her son rebuild.

Cynthia shared the positive impact that coaching has had on her life. The personalized guidance and mentorship she received through Mobility Mentoring® empowered her to set and achieve meaningful housing, economic, health, education, and career goals. Cynthia’s story serves as a testament to the effectiveness of our approach in helping families overcome adversity and build a foundation for a brighter future.

While sharing her experiences, Cynthia also sheds light on common misconceptions about homelessness. Through the unwavering support of COTS, donors, partnerships, and the transformative power of Mobility Mentoring®, individuals like Cynthia can rewrite their narratives, breaking free from the cycle of homelessness and embracing new opportunities.

COTS serves approximately 1,200 people annually – 60 percent of whom are children.

Holiday Cheer: Celebrating Community, Achievements and Anticipating Possibilities

As we celebrate end-of-year holidays, let us be inspired to be compassionate, understanding, and supportive to everyone around us. It’s the most wonderful time of the year to come together as a community to spread cheer and kindness. Whether through volunteering, donating, or simply offering a kind word, each of us has the power to make a positive impact on someone’s life.

At this time, let’s not only celebrate the conclusion of this chapter but also the promising future filled with possibilities that awaits. Getting to know the journey of the families we work with at COTS throughout this year serves as a source of inspiration, reminding us that, even in the face of challenges, the human spirit has what it takes to triumph, innovate, and usher in a new era of possibilities. May this upcoming year be filled with even more achievements, milestones, and the continued pursuit of success and self-sufficiency for us all. Wishing you a future filled with promise and endless opportunities to succeed at whatever you put your mind to!
