Davenport University in Grand Rapids announced that Anthony Anderson, currently serving as chief financial officer, has been appointed interim president effective July 1, following the retirement of President Richard J. Pappas on June 30.

The appointment was made by Davenport University’s Board of Trustees after a national search conducted in partnership with WittKieffer Executive Search firm. The search process included input from a Search Advisory Committee and members of the campus community.

“After careful consideration, the Board determined this is the right moment to ensure strong, focused leadership while thoughtfully assessing the university’s long-term leadership needs,” says Paula D. Cunningham, chair of the Board of Trustees. “We are confident in Anthony’s ability to provide steady, effective leadership during this transition. He will provide continuity while working closely with the Board and the campus community to advance key priorities and position the university for its next chapter.”

Cunningham says Anderson brings institutional knowledge and a proven track record of leadership across the institution. As interim president, she believes he will provide continuity and stability while supporting the university’s ongoing strategic initiatives.

“Anthony has a strong commitment to advancing student success, innovation and the university’s Vision 2030 priorities,” she says.

Anderson joined the university in 2023 after serving in financial and operational leadership roles in medical technology and oil and gas industries for nearly 20 years. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Finance from Canisius College in Buffalo, N.Y., and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Houston. Anderson will pursue a doctor of philosophy degree in educational leadership this fall from Western Michigan University.

“I’m honored to serve Davenport University in this role at such an important time,” Anderson says. Davenport has a strong foundation, a clear strategy in Vision 2030, and, most importantly, real opportunity ahead. My focus is building on that momentum by supporting our students, strengthening our academic and operational excellence, and continuing to advance the innovation that defines who we are. I look forward to working closely with our faculty, staff, and Board to move the university forward.”
