WARREN — Winning Futures is recruiting business mentors for the 2014-2015 school year. The school-based mentoring program, focuses on the life skills of character value identification, goal setting, career preparation, and strategic planning. The pre-packaged program is implemented in Detroit, Harper Woods, Madison Heights, Pontiac, and Warren schools.
“The time I spent with my mentees had a huge impact on me,” says Kevin Harkness, director of strategic sourcing at Valassis and mentor at Harper Woods High School. “It was exactly the kind of environment that I was looking for – structure with an opportunity to work directly with the kids. Simply put, it was consistently the best hour of my week, by far! It really was an experience I’ll never forget.”
Winning Futures’ one-hour weekly program is unique in that mentors meet with small groups of students during the school day to take part in group discussions and structured activities. Winning Futures provides all of the training, activities, supplies, and on-site facilitation and support.
More than 95percent of mentored students continue their education past high school, and the organization has awarded over $1.7 million in scholarships to local youth. Since 1994, 30,000 students have been impacted by Winning Futures.
