Ruomu Hu, vice president and general manager at Novi-based Harman International; and Reggie Roland, principal director of partnerships at Interior Environments in Novi, recently joined the board of directors of Warren-based Winning Futures, a nationally recognized nonprofit organization that was created to help metro Detroit high school students determine paths after high school as well as teach life and job readiness skills.

“Everyone deserves a fair chance at the American dream,” says Hu. “Seeing the fundamental impacts Winning Futures has made for these beautiful young minds and their bright futures has made me a firm believer and loyal supporter. I’m thrilled to be a part of this organization and use my skills and network to help metro Detroit students.”

“I’m honored and thankful to share that I have aligned with Winning Futures as a board member,” says Roland. “I have always had a passion for supporting my community. This board position allows me to help students, especially those that look like me, to excel in high school and college and to achieve their educational goals.”

“Ruomu has been on our advisory board and brings with her a unique combination of skills and experience,” says Kristina Marshall, president and CEO of Winning Futures. “Reggie mentored one of our college students and brings with him a keen understanding of how our program works and its impact. Together, they will undoubtedly help us better support students in our Workforce Prep program.”

Winning Futures’ seven-year experiential Workforce Prep program features partnerships with local businesses and volunteers who serve as mentors, working with students to explore careers, develop goals, and compete for scholarships.

The curriculum is evidence-based and structured and was found by researchers at the University of Michigan to have a statistically significant and equitable impact on all students, regardless of race, economic level, or gender. Since 1994, Winning Futures has positively impacted 49,000 students and awarded $2 million in scholarships.
