Warren’s Ascension Michigan cardiovascular service line has appointed Dr. Kristopher M. George to the newly created chair of cardiothoracic surgery of Ascension Southeast Michigan and medical director of cardiothoracic surgery at Ascension Providence Hospital.

“It is an honor to join the reputable Ascension Michigan cardiovascular leadership team and to come back to my home state,” says George. “In recent years, resources within the cardiothoracic practice have grown significantly, ensuring full cardiac support and recovery, lending a higher level of lifestyle sustainability than ever before. I look forward to using my expertise in valve surgery and reoperations to bring innovative solutions to support the system’s long-term success.”

As chair, George will oversee operational goals, strategic growth, and program development of Ascension’s hospitals in Rochester, Southfield, Novi, Warren, Madison Heights, and Detroit. His objectives include executing technology practices within the system’s heart centers.

Previously, he has held positions in California, where he was the medical director of cardiothoracic surgery, Community Regional Medical Center and professor of clinical surgery at the University of California San Francisco. His work focuses on all aspects of adult heart surgery, and he has more than 20 years of experience.

George received his medical degree from Wayne State University. At George Washington University, he completed his cardiothoracic residency, and at Johns Hopkins Hospital he completed a cardiothoracic fellowship.

“Adding high-level talent like Dr. George to Ascension Michigan’s leadership team is a strategic move to support our goals for southeast Michigan,” says Dr. Shukri David, chair of Ascension Michigan Cardiovascular Service Line. “His dedication to heart care is demonstrated through his visionary, forward-thinking approach. We welcome him back to Michigan, providing our teams and communities with his leadership and expertise.”

Among his other responsibilities, George is active on several cardiac surgical societies, has been published in surgical journals, and participates in clinical trials. George will report to David.

Ascension operates 15 hospitals and hundreds of related health care facilities in Michigan.
