Varnum Names Attorneys to Partnership

Grand Rapids-based Varnum has announced that Jeff Koelzer, Matthew Maltz, and John Sturgis have been elected to the firm’s partnership, reflecting growth in the firm’s Ann Arbor and Grand Rapids offices.

Maltz is a corporate attorney in Varnum’s Ann Arbor office. He has a broad range of transactional experience focused on public and private mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures, equity investments, and private equity transactions. He also provides general corporate and day-to-day legal advice to public and private companies and entrepreneurs at all stages of growth. Prior to joining Varnum as an associate in 2019, he worked as a private equity associate in Chicago. Maltz is a graduate of the University of Chicago Law School with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan.

Koelzer is a member of the litigation and trial practice team in the Grand Rapids office. He focuses his practice on commercial litigation, creditors’ rights, complex family law matters, and municipal/public sector litigation. He has first-chaired several trials before judges and jurors. His appellate experience includes matters before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit and briefing cases for the Michigan Supreme Court. Koelzer joined Varnum in 2014 after graduating from the University of Michigan.

Sturgis is a real estate attorney based in the Grand Rapids office. He assists clients with real estate sales and acquisitions, commercial leasing matters on behalf of both landlords and tenants, and real estate financing transactions. He joined the firm in 2014 as an associate. Sturgis received his law degree from the University of Iowa College of Law and his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan.
