Attorneys Julia A. Perkins and Brendan G. Best have joined Varnum, in the law firm’s Novi and Detroit offices, respectively.

Perkins works with clients in family law matters including divorce, child custody, child support, and parenting time matters. She has experience with international custody cases and valuation and division of high net worth marital estates. She is also a certified mediator with a focus in family law.

Previously, Perkins  worked at Jaffe, Raitt, Heuer & Weiss PC in Southfield, where she was a partner in the family law practice. Perkins is an adjunct family law professor at the University of Detroit Mercy-Detroit. She also serves on the Planning Commission for the City of Canton and formerly served on the Canton Zoning Board of Appeals.

Perkins, of Canton, earned her bachelor’s in management at Indiana University and her juris doctor magna cum laude from Detroit College of Law.

Best has a national practice focused on workouts and bankruptcies. He represents creditors, debtors and other parties in Chapter 11 bankruptcy cases, out-of-court workouts, distressed restructuring transactions and general insolvencies. He also serves as outside bankruptcy counsel for an international building supply and service company, advises clients on commercial issues with troubled customers and suppliers, and serves as counsel to official unsecured creditors’ committees in Chapter 11 cases.

Best, of Birmingham, most recently was a partner at Shafer and Weiner PLLC in Bloomfield Hills. He also served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Ghana, West Africa for two years prior to law school, and currently serves on the board of the Ally Jolie Baldwin Foundation.

Best earned his bachelor’s in geography from Wayne State University and his juris doctor from Wayne State University Law School and George Washington University.
