BIRMINGHAM – The Townsend Hotel, a AAA 4-Diamond luxury property known for its exceptional service and amenities, announced the selection of a new managing director, Steven Kalczynski, following an extensive nationwide review of candidates. Kalczynski will replace Peter Wilde, who is leaving The Townsend after nearly 13 years to pursue new opportunities as he and his family relocate out of state. Wilde made the announcement of his departure and successor. Kalczynski will assume his new role on Sept., 10.
Kalczynski brings more than 30 years of experience in the hospitality industry to his new role with The Townsend. During his decade-long career with Starwood Hotels and Resorts, he held leadership positions as the general manager of the exclusive Ballantyne Resort & Spa in Charlotte, N.C. and the St. Regis Century Hotel in Los Angeles. As the GM of Ballantyne Resort, Kalczynski earned Starwood Hotels & Resorts’ prestigious “Tiffany Award” for highest overall quality scores in North America for all St. Regis and Luxury Collection properties.
Additionally, Kalczynski has significant international experience, having served in senior management positions with The Peninsula Group in Beijing, China, Oberoi Hotels & Resorts in Mumbai, India and, most recently, as the general manager of the Sheraton Doha Resort & Convention Hotel in Doha, Qatar.

After completing his undergraduate work at Northeastern University in Boston, Kalczynski earned his M.B.A. degree in international business and marketing from Rutgers University in New Jersey. A native of Shrewsbury, Mass. and currently residing in Charlotte, N.C., the father of two will be relocating to the Birmingham area with his wife and daughter.
