The Detroit Athletic Club’s Sherri Perez has been inducted into Michigan Meetings and Events magazine’s 2020 Hall of Fame as the state’s best special events planner.
Perez has produced events at the DAC since 2002. She oversees every detail and guides a team of eight professionals.
“I don’t believe it’s common for someone working at a private club to be recognized publicly for their expertise,” says Charles Johnson, executive manager of the DAC. “But Sherri being named the best special events planner is well-deserved. Anyone who has attended a special event at the DAC, either as a member or as a guest, knows how special our events are. Every detail is considered. There are always surprises and ‘wow’ moments. Sherri’s thoughtfulness and creativity drives much of this.”
Perez is a 1998 graduate of the School of Hospitality and Business at Michigan State University’s Eli Broad College of Business, which is in East Lansing. She launched her professional career as catering and convention services manager and assistant director of catering at Hyatt Regency O’Hare in Illinois.
Under Perez, the formerly separate catering and special events department at the DAC were combined for efficiency and impact. Perez also developed training manuals, service guarantees, and mechanisms to track and forecast revenues.
Perez is noted for her ability to focus on client needs, tap the expertise of her staff, and use feedback to further refine her department’s efforts.
Michigan Meetings & Events’ annual Best Of awards honor planners in the regional meetings and events industry. All winners are hand-picked by the meeting planners, event planners, and suppliers who read the magazine.
The DAC was founded in 1887. Every year, it produces more than 200 special programs and more than 2,000 catered events for its members and their guests. The clubhouse has 26,000 square feet of event space comprising traditional ballrooms, meeting rooms, and outdoor space.
