BELLAIRE — Shanty Creek Resorts, a four-season northern Michigan resort destination, has two of its four golf courses listed among the Top 20 Public Courses in Michigan in the recent issue of GOLF magazine.
Cedar River Golf Club, designed by Tom Weiskopf, is ranked No. 10 in the state while the Arnold Palmer designed masterpiece, The Legend, is No. 19 on the list. The rankings are determined through a unique rating system utilizing top golf writers, industry insiders and golf course raters.
Shanty Creek features 72 holes of championship golf lead by The Legend and Cedar River. The Legend course winds through beautiful hills and ridges offering stunning views of Lake Bellaire and the surrounding northern Michigan forests, while Cedar River, which opened in 2000 and was then listed among GOLF magazine’s “Top Ten New Courses” in the country, is a beautiful and challenging course with dramatic elevation changes and features, including memorable stretches of holes around lakes and along the Cedar River. Cedar River GC was also included in Rolex’s Top 1,000 Golf Courses in the World publication in 2011.
“It’s an honor to be recognized for our golf product,” says Brian Kautz, director of Golf and head PGA Pro for Shanty Creek, “(for Shanty Creek) to be named alongside the other top golf courses in the state is a testament to the quality and variety of Shanty Creek’s course designs and our commitment to course maintenance and conditions.”
Kautz says since SCR’s major renovation of its original hotel at Summit Village, it has reclaimed its lofty position as one of the foremost golf resorts in the Midwest. The centerpiece of the renovation focused on the beautiful Lakeview Hotel & Conference Center, which overlooks Lake Bellaire.
SCR’s other two villages are Cedar River, which has an 86-room luxury condominium hotel adjacent to the award-winning Weiskopf course, and Schuss Mountain, which offers the resort’s best skiing facilities, plus the popular Warner Bowen-designed Schuss Mountain Golf Club and a variety of condominium rooms in privately-owned cottages that are part of the resort’s room rental program.
