Rotary International President to Speak at EMU Commencement

YPSILANTI — Gary C.K. Huang, president of Rotary International, will be the Eastern Michigan University commencement speaker Dec. 20.  An Eastern Michigan alumnus, Huang will be awarded an honorary doctor of business during the ceremony.

Huang is an adviser for Wah Lee Industrial Corporation and the Bank of Panhsin (Taiwan), and director of Federal Corp. and Sunty Development Co. Ltd. in Taiwan. Huang is the first Chinese president of Rotary International.

Huang has served Rotary International in various local, regional and national leadership positions, including chair of the 2014 International Assembly Committee, adviser for the Permanent Fund Committee for Taiwan, Macau and Hong Kong, and PolioPlus advocacy adviser for Taiwan. Rotary International launched PolioPlus in 1985 to help eradicate polio.

A native of Fujian, a province in southern China, Huang grew up in Taiwan. After graduating from Eastern Michigan with a degree in business administration, he earned a graduate degree from New York University and spent time in Europe and Japan, learning about the insurance business. He returned to Taiwan to work for a small insurance firm, which over the next 15 years he built into one of the largest agencies in the industry.
