Red Wings to Offer Healthy Food Choices at The Joe

DETROIT — The Detroit Red Wings and Saint Joseph Mercy Health System will offer a “Healthy Choice” program designed to highlight and label more than 50 healthy food options within Joe Louis Arena during Red Wings home games and all Olympia Entertainment sporting and entertainment events held at The Joe.

“As one of the major health systems in southeast Michigan, we live our mission by leading the way in providing a variety of wellness options to the communities we serve,” said Rob Casalou, regional president and CEO, Saint Joseph Mercy Health System. “We want to help our community stay well and out of the hospital by encouraging fitness and eating great, fresh food no matter where they are.”

The Red Wings will label healthy choice options, which are based on guidelines set by the American Heart Association, by marking those items with the health system’s logo. This designation will appear on concession menus located on the Joe Louis Arena concourse, as well as suite and restaurant menus within the International Bancard Olympia Club, Comerica Bank Legends Club and the Rehmann Suite Level.

“The Red Wings players view their meals as an opportunity to fuel each day with energy-boosting, nutritious and flavorful foods, and it makes sense to provide similar healthy options to Red Wings fans attending games at Joe Louis Arena,” says Lisa McDowell, Red Wings team nutritionist and a board certified specialist in sports dietetics as well as director of clinical nutrition with Saint Joseph Mercy Health System.

All approved items meet the AHA requirements for low sodium, saturated fat, total fat and cholesterol, and are dense in nutrients, vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants.

Available healthy food options include fresh mozzarella and tomato salad and fruit cups on the concourse; Cedar Plank Orange Glazed Salmon and Black Bean Burgers on the Rehman Suite Level; and Seafood Quesadillas and Grilled Mahi Mahi in the International Bancard Olympia Club.
