DEARBORN— The Oakwood Healthcare division of Beaumont Health has opened its $8.7 million breast care center named, The Karen Colina Wilson Smithbauer Comprehensive Center for Breast Care.
The center was made possible by a $7.2 million gift from businesswoman and philanthropist, Karen Colina Wilson Smithbauer, a breast cancer survivor.
“As a breast cancer survivor, I know what it feels like to be on the other side of the table,” says Smithbauer, who is also a Oakwood Foundation board member and chair of Oakwood’s Women’s Health Advisory Committee. “As I’ve become more involved, I’ve asked myself: What can I do so another woman doesn’t have to face what I’ve faced?”
Led by Dr. Majd Aburabia, a board certified surgeon who is fellowship trained in breast surgery, the new center offers a multi-specialty team approach for the treatment of all types of breast disorders.
The center, 18100 Oakwood Blvd., has onsite support provided by a nurse navigator, genetic counselor, nurse practitioner and other clinicians, unlike any other center in the region.
