The Anton Art Center in Mount Clemens has named Matt Matthews as its new executive director.

The Anton Art Center (AAC) was founded in 1969 in the Carnegie Library building in downtown Mount Clemens. The AAC aims to build an open community around creative expression by presenting an array of programming to appeal to diverse audiences, providing support for the arts and becoming a focal point for arts programming, and working towards inclusion, diversity, equity, and access.

With more than a decade of experience in nonprofit leadership, Matthews most recently served for five years with Playworks Michigan, two as associate director. While at Playworks, Matthews established sustainable program expansion to new geographies across Michigan while rebuilding and repairing partnerships lost during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Matthews worked with diverse communities, building relationships with key stakeholders, and collaborating on programs that promote social equity. He also developed strategic partnerships with individual donors, professional sports teams, corporations, and foundations.

“I am excited for the opportunity to join the Anton Art Center, an organization with such a rich and impactful 50-plus -year history in Mount Clemens,” says Matthews. “I am particularly inspired by my discussions with the Board and members of the Team. Their sincere and intentional desire to be a hub of culture and community in Macomb County and across Southeast Michigan is inspiring. I look forward to contributing my experience as a relationship builder and fundraiser to help the organization grow in its program and financial goals.”

He earned his bachelor’s degree from Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant and a master’s degree from Northwest Missouri State University focused on team development and group dynamics.
