Making Michigan History

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich., Sept. 16, 2010 — Ford Motor, Herman Miller, Faygo — names that Michigan residents have known for as long as they can remember, but none of which have hit the 125 year mark. A less recognized name, but certainly one of Michigan’s oldest business successes, M. Jacob & Sons will celebrate their role as a leader in the packaging industry for the last 125 years this October.

Max Jacob founded his one man bottle collection operation in Detroit in 1885, five years after immigrating to the United States. One hundred twenty-five years later, M. Jacob & Sons produces an array of packaging for clients nationwide. One of the first to recycle, offer plastic packaging and employ the first saleswoman in the industry, M. Jacob & Sons has always taken forward strides.

“Our company has a long history and commitment to tradition, but we also love to innovate. We were one of the first companies in America to recycle bottles, and one of the first to sell plastic bottles,” says Marty Jacob, President of M. Jacob & Sons and third generation of Jacob working in the family company. “My grandfather (Max) was committed to serving his customers with personal attention and immediate service. Our company’s continued commitment to this tradition, along with a willingness to embrace change, has contributed to its longevity.”

M. Jacob & Sons experiences continued success due in large part to their ability to innovate and adapt. “We continually update our products and services to keep up with technology and trends. By immersing ourselves in clients’ projects and challenges, M. Jacob & Sons produces effective, packaging solutions customized to meet the needs of our customers,” says David Lubin, M. Jacob & Sons COO.

“We are also involved in reducing the carbon footprint of the packaging industry and offer eco-friendly, yet cost efficient, options that help our customers preserve the environment without hurting their bottom lines.” says Deborah Jacob, Chairperson of the Board for M. Jacob & Sons.

Always a pioneer in the industry, M. Jacob & Sons hired Elaine Jacob in 1953. Elaine, third generation in the family business, became the first saleswoman in the field and spearheaded the plastics division, introducing this new packaging technology to buyers throughout the country.

“Now in our fifth generation of Jacob family involvement, our legacy is a commitment to the traditions of our founder and his mindset that success shall never be taken for granted, and the challenging times always bring unexpected opportunity,” says Deborah Jacob.

M. Jacob & Sons is a testament that one entrepreneur’s dream can thrive by thinking forward and taking risks while still staying true to a foundation of quality.
