Karmanos Cancer Institute and Karmanos Cancer Center Name New Leadership

DETROIT — Charles Becker has been elected as board chair of the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute  and Tim Monahan has been elected as board chair of the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Center, effective Tuesday.

Additionally, Alan S. Schwartz, who has served for the past four years as chair of the KCI board, will become its vice chair and Tom Goss will serve as vice chair of the KCC board.

“Both Chuck Becker and Alan Schwartz have dedicated an extraordinary amount of their own time to Karmanos during their service on the KCI and KCC boards and we truly appreciate that,” said Dr. Gerold Bepler, president and CEO of Karmanos Cancer Institute. “I am also pleased that Tim Monahan will serve as chair and Tom Goss will serve as vice chair of the KCC board. We will make great strides in the future with cancer care and research under the leadership of these four dynamic and very dedicated individuals.”

Becker, who previously served as KCC board chair, is the owner and chairman of Becker Ventures LLC, established in 1998 to invest in and manage a variety of business ventures, including manufacturing, real estate, hotels and private equity.

Schwartz has been a long-time board member of the Karmanos Cancer Institute. His law practice includes business and succession planning, acquisitions and sales of businesses and general corporate representation. Schwartz has been with Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn LLP for more than 40 years, where he previously served as its Chairman and CEO and currently serves as the firm’s vice chairman.

Monahan, who previously served as vice chair of the KCC board, is managing director of BBK Southfield and leads the firm’s banking practice. He has more than 20 years of senior level experience in financial management and commercial banking. Prior to joining BBK, Monahan was the chief commercial credit officer for Standard Federal Bank, a subsidiary of ABN AMRO (now Bank of America). He also serves on The LDP Committee for the Archdiocese of Detroit.

Goss, chairman of GOSS LLC and principal of The Goss Group Inc., has served on the KCC Board of Directors since January 2008. Previously, he was the University of Michigan director of Intercollegiate Athletics. Goss is licensed by the State of Michigan as a resident insurance agent in the lines of Life/Health & Accident and Property & Casualty.
