Judy Tipton Named Executive Director for Playworks Michigan

Playworks Michigan, a Detroit-based nonprofit organization that helps children stay active and build life skills through recess and play, named Judy Tipton as executive director.

Playworks Michigan, a Detroit-based nonprofit organization that helps children stay active and build life skills through recess and play, named Judy Tipton as executive director.

Tipton comes to Playworks with a background in nonprofit fundraising and leadership. For the past 10 years she has served as a director of corporate relations with United Way for Southeastern Michigan where she was responsible for the development, implementation, monitoring, and assessment of plans to achieve portfolio revenue goals towards a $40 million annual budget.

She also acted as director of development with Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit and for 826michigan in Ann Arbor, the latter a nonprofit focused on cultivating writing skills among students from ages six to 18.

Tipton functions as a development consultant for Read to a Child, a national nonprofit with a presence in Pontiac and Detroit.

“I am greatly looking forward to advancing the mission of this organization, which dedicates itself to ensuring equitable opportunities for safe and meaningful playtime for all children which is important in developing social and emotional skills they will use in the classroom, in the workplace, and in life,” says Tipton. “At the same time, I plan to strengthen existing partner relationships while fostering and cultivating new local and statewide collaborations in an effort to increase our presence and impact throughout the region.”

Prior to Tipton’s time in the nonprofit arena, she spent 18 years AstraZeneca and 3M.

Tipton earned a bachelor’s degree in marketing from Southern University/A&M College in Baton Rouge. La., where she was an NCAA Division 1 collegiate athlete in volleyball and Southern University Hall of Fame nominee. She also holds an MBA from University of Phoenix (Ann Arbor).
