Gilda’s Club Metro Detroit based in Royal Oak, a nonprofit organization ensuring those who need support through a cancer diagnosis get it, has announced the addition of Angela Valchine, Veronica Perera, and Sabrina Mayhew to its board of directors.
Gilda’s Club has expanded to three locations throughout metro Detroit along with a virtual location that has ensured access to crucial services for families seeking support through a cancer diagnosis.
“I am delighted to welcome Angela, Sabrina, and Veronica to the Board. They will bring a rich diversity of thought, experience, insight, ideas, and action to help make sure no one in the Detroit area faces the complexities of a cancer diagnosis alone,” says Bill Pumphrey, board chair.
Valchine, a health care executive, is vice president of U.S. physician relations, marketing, and communications at GenesisCare. Prior to that she was with Cancer Treatment Centers of America and CEO of Swan for Life Cancer Foundation.
Perera rejoins the board after she stepped off when her husband finished his urologic oncology fellowship in Philadelphia. She is an attorney for a nonprofit legal services organization, serving low-income families doing eviction defense and family law matters for survivors of domestic violence.
Mayhew is a member of Gilda’s Club, having attended when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Sabrina is a PhD candidate in nursing oncology and advocacy. She works for Cancer Support Community in a remote navigator and advocacy role. CSC is the umbrella organization for Gilda’s Club.
“The Board of Directors is fuel for me. They provide the energy, validation and guidance that supports our direct and impactful services,” says Laura Varon, CEO of Gilda’s Club. “I am thrilled to be working with Angela, Nickie, and Sabrina along with the rest of our purposeful board.”
Besides its Royal Oak Clubhouse, Gilda’s Club Metro Detroit operates Gilda’s Lakehouse in St. Clair Shores and Gilda’s at Durfee in Detroit.
