FEV, Inc. Demonstrates Battery Management System Development and Testing Capability at 2010 SAE World Congress

1994

AUBURN HILLS, Mich., March 30 /PRNewswire/ — FEV, Inc., (FEV) a leading developer of advanced powertrain and vehicle technologies, announced today that it will demonstrate its Battery Management System Development and Testing capability at the 2010 SAE World Congress, April 13 – 15 at Cobo Center in Detroit, including its own internally developed FEV LiiONMAN system. FEV will demonstrate the technology in its booth, #430. Battery Management System Development and Testing is one example of the state-of-the-art capabilities of FEV’s Hybrid and Electric Vehicle Development Center in Auburn Hills, Mich.

FEV works with battery suppliers on internal development projects and on cooperative projects, utilizing its experience with both Passive and Active balancing techniques. FEV provides expertise in the development of either air- or liquid-based thermal management systems based on Finite Element Analysis (FEA) simulations. The company’s engineers can develop cell specific battery algorithms as well as design and implement complete packs, including performance simulation, cell selection and module / pack design.

Storage and management of electrical energy in hybrid and electric vehicles is a key element in advancing this technology, and special consideration must be given to electrical, thermal and mechanical loads, which must be kept in allowable ranges over all cells that make up the battery. Proper thermal management is the key to maximizing the effectiveness of Li-Ion batteries. These considerations make extensive testing necessary, and FEV offers a comprehensive suite of design, development, testing and validation capabilities to its customers. FEV also applies CFD simulation for analysis of the thermal behavior of battery cells/modules/packs.

FEV engineers routinely work to develop a client’s battery management system and, in other cases, they are asked to adapt an internally developed system, such as the FEV designed and developed LiiONMAN system, to support customer needs. FEV’s capabilities include overall pack cycling, testing and validation of safety systems, and testing capabilities up to 1000A / 900V for a total of 250kW.
