DETROIT, April 26, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — On Thursday, April 21, 2011, the Port of Detroit welcomed the arrival of the ocean going vessel, Federal Nakagawa at 07:30 hours at the Nicholson Terminal & Dock Company. The ship’s arrival began the port’s 2011 shipping season.
The Federal Nakagawa, a Hong Kong flagged vessel, set sail on April 4, 2011 from Teesport, United Kingdom with a cargo of steel. The ship, 656 feet long with 78 foot beam, sailed under the command of Captain Karl Fernandes. Hong Kong is its home port. Steven Olinek, interim executive director of the Detroit/Wayne County Port Authority (DWCPA) will present the coveted J.L. Hudson Trophy to World Shipping, the ship’s agent.
The Detroit/Wayne County Port Authority, established in 1978, is a non profit organization based in Detroit, whose mission is “to promote commerce and enhanced trade opportunities within the global marketplace through the Port of Detroit, by implementing creative economic development solutions and complement its governing units.” Funding for the Port Authority is provided by the State of Michigan, Wayne County and the City of Detroit.
