Detroit Medical Center (DMC) Medical Group in Detroit announced Dr. Amy Somerset, a board-certified general surgeon who specializes in bariatric surgery, has joined the group and will be a part of the surgical team at DMC’s Bariatric Surgery Program in addition to seeing patients in her practice.

Somerset has expertise in the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, revision bariatric surgery and gastric band removal. She also specializes in heartburn surgery, gastrointestinal surgery (esophagus, stomach, small intestine, and colon), hernia repair, upper endoscopy and colonoscopy, and gallbladder removal.

“Dr. Somerset brings a great deal of knowledge and surgical skill to the DMC Bariatric Surgery Program. She will play a key role in working to enhance our program as we look at system-wide expansion and integration,” says Dr. Michael H. Wood, director of the DMC Bariatric Surgery Program.

“I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to partner with a surgeon with such tremendous talent, energy and great work ethic. With her commitment, she brings additional strength to our bariatric program as we reach out to the community that we serve.”

She offers both robotic and laparoscopic techniques designed to promote less pain and faster recovery for patients.

Somerset earned her medical degree from the Ohio State University School of Medicine. She completed her residency in general surgery at Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak, and a fellowship in minimally invasive bariatric surgery at the Detroit Medical Center/Wayne State University.
