DETROIT, Aug. 5, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/Theodore Schreiber, M.D., Specialist-In-Chief, Cardiovascular Medicine, Detroit Medical Center; President, DMC Cardiovascular Institute, is the only interventional cardiologist in Michigan named among the top 1% nationally in his field, according to the latest U.S. News Media & World Report “Top Doc” list.

U.S. News Top Doctors was created in collaboration with Castle Connolly Medical Ltd., publisher of America’s Top Doctors and other consumer health guides. It draws from Castle Connolly’s database of Top Doctors, all recommended for their clinical skills by other doctors and individually vetted by a physician-led research team.

“For decades, the Best Hospitals rankings have helped guide patients who need an especially high level of care to hospitals that excel in providing it,” said Avery Comarow, U.S. News Health Rankings Editor. “Top Doctors has a similar mission. We want to help consumers find the doctors in their area who come highly recommended by other physicians.”

Dr. Schreiber’s name will be included in a free searchable online directory that lists the top peer-nominated physicians from across the country.

Schreiber, who currently performs about 1,500 heart and vascular procedures per year at the DMC, is also the creator of DMC Cardio Team One™, a 24/7 program for the emergency treatment of heart attack patients. Compared to the rest of U.S. hospitals, DMC routinely achieves restoration of blood flow within an average of 45 minutes after hospital arrival, far exceeding the national goal of 90 minutes or less.

“This honor given to Dr. Schreiber by his peers underscores his standing as a national pioneer in his field,” said Michael Duggan, President & CEO, Detroit Medical Center.

“Under his leadership, Cardiology & Heart Surgery at DMC Harper University Hospital has been rising each year in the U.S. News Media & World Report Best Hospitals rankings, reaching #36 for 2011-12.”

Earlier this year, Dr. Schreiber completed the first two Medtronic CoreValve® transcatheter aortic valve implants (TAVI) ever achieved in Michigan. The procedures are a part of CVI’s participation in the Medtronic CoreValve U.S. Clinical Trial. This multi-state trial evaluates a new, non-surgical alternative to open-heart surgery for patients with severe aortic stenosis.
