COMMERCE TOWNSHIP — The Detroit Medical Center Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital has been designated a Lung Cancer Screening Center by the American College of Radiology. The ACR Lung Cancer Screening Center designation recognizes facilities that have committed to practice safe, effective diagnostic care for individuals at the highest risk for lung cancer.

In order to receive this elite distinction, facilities must be accredited by the ACR in computed tomography in the chest module, as well as undergo a rigorous assessment of its lung cancer screening protocol and infrastructure. Also required are procedures in place for follow-up patient care, such as counseling and smoking cessation programs.

Detroit Medical Center hospitals have been ranked among the best in Southeast Michigan in pulmonary care. DMC hospitals now offer low-dose CT screens to qualified patients for $50.

“If you or a loved one are 50 years or older and a current or former smoker, a lung screening can detect early stages of lung cancer, even if you have no symptoms,” said DMC Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital chief of pulmonary medicine Lawrence MacDonald, M.D., FACP. “Early detection, for obvious reasons, is the key to successfully treating lung cancer. What’s important about this new screening, and preventative detection overall, is education—learning if you are at risk for lung cancer.”
