ROYAL OAK — The Detroit Zoological Society is inviting teens ages 16 and 17 to apply for a “Volunteen” Counselor in Training program that will enable them to volunteer in the Detroit Zoo’s Summer Safari camps from June 23 to Aug.15.

The “Volunteen” program is for individuals with good communication skills who enjoy biology, environmental or life sciences and similar disciplines. Teens work mostly outdoors, interacting with young campers while assisting with camp activities and tours throughout the Zoo.

“This program is beneficial to teens who want to gain experience in teaching, team-building, leadership, problem-solving and other skills that will allow them to thrive in a professional environment,” said Linda Denomme, volunteer services manager. “There are a limited number of positions, so interested candidates should apply right away.”

Potential “Volunteens” have until April 30 to submit an application. Teens selected for the program will be required to attend a day-long training session on June 16 and volunteer for a minimum of a two week-long Summer Safari camp sessions.
