Detroit resident and lung cancer survivor Debbie Pickworth was one of four people nationwide to receive the CURE Media Group’s 2020 Lung Cancer Heroes award during an Oct. 15 award ceremony.
Former NFL player Chris Draft was this year’s keynote speaker. To slow the spread of COIVD-19, the ceremony was held virtually.
Pickworth was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer and is living with the disease, from which her mother and grandmother. Along with her battle against cancer, she has joined the local leadership board and is a volunteer for the American Lung Association, hosts a lung cancer support group, is a mentor of Imerman Angels for those with lung cancer, and serves as one of the Lung Association’s representatives as a consumer reviewer with the U.S. Department of Defense’s Lung Cancer Research Program.
“Debbie is the third generation in her family diagnosed with lung cancer and has been highly motivated to support newly diagnosed survivors and raise awareness and funds for better screening and treatment options,” says Maureen Rovas, executive director for the Lung Association.
The annual LUNG FORCE Walk Detroit brought Pickworth to the Lung Association, and she continues to be very engaged with the event. She has served as the event chair and is now a member of the engagement committee. Her team, Team Pickworth, has raised $17,300 over the past six years.
“Debbie has made an incredible impact over the past seven years as a passionate advocate for those affected by lung cancer,” Rovas says. “She makes it her mission for others to get the support that was not available to her when she heard the words ‘you have lung cancer.’”
The 2020 Lung Cancer Heroes awards recognizes four individuals nationwide who have gone above and beyond in making a difference for those affected by lung cancer.
