Community Foundation Names New Special Assistant

DETROIT – Melissa Smiley has been named as special assistant and strategy officer of The Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan. In this position she will assist and provide strategic counsel across a variety of projects and initiatives.

Smiley, of Detroit, previously served as deputy chief of staff for Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, where she assisted with tracking departmental performance metrics and implementing restructuring initiatives. Previously, Smiley worked for Data Driven and has a background in research and analysis for nonprofits and election campaigns.

She holds a Ph.D. in epidemiological science and master’s in urban planning and public health from the University of Michigan. She is a member of the first cohort of Detroit Revitalization Fellows.
