Coach Lou Holtz to Speak at the Academy of the Sacred Heart, Receive Leaders of Conscience Award


BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich., April 29, 2009 – On Friday, May 1, the Academy of the Sacred Heart’s Leaders of Conscience Speaker Series will present Lou Holtz, legendary football coach, author and ESPN analyst. Holtz will speak on “A Game Plan for Life – Ethics in Sports, Coaching and Leadership,” and receive the Academy’s Leaders of Conscience Award. The Leaders of Conscience Speaker Series is the hallmark of the Academy’s year-long celebration of its 50th Anniversary on its Bloomfield Hills campus and nearly 160 years of education and outreach in the Detroit Metropolitan area.

WHO: Lou Holtz is the only coach in the history of college football to lead six different teams to a bowl game, to win five bowl games with different teams and to have four different college teams place in the final Top 20 rankings. Holtz became the 27th head coach of Notre Dame football following two seasons at Minnesota, seven at Arkansas, one at the NFL New York Jets, four at North Carolina State and three at William & Mary. Holtz is the author of three New York Times best-selling books, The Fighting Spirit, Winning Everyday: A Game Plan for Success and Wins, Losses and Lessons.  His latest book is A Teen’s Game Plan for Life (revised September 2007).

Holtz’s keynote address, “A Game Plan for Life: Ethics in Sports, Coaching and Leadership,” will cap an evening of activities designed to bring together the greater community and families with children ages 10-18, including the ASH Experience Youth Sports Challenge, a general admission stadium-style dinner and the ASH “Ultimate” Tailgate Party with Lou Holtz for patrons.

5:00 – 7:00 p.m. – Media check-in at the Academy of the Sacred Heart, Administration Building parking lot.

5:00 – 6:25 p.m. – ASH “Ultimate” Tailgate Party with Lou Holtz – VIP/Patron Party
Meet and greet Lou Holtz, Rick Forzano (Detroit Lions) and Hoot McInerney (auto dealer owner), as well as other community leaders.  Enjoy fine cuisine and beverages tailgate style. Holtz, Forzano and McInerney will make remarks during a brief program at 5:40 p.m.  Ages 21 and over only; located in Administration parking lot.

5:00 – 6:25 p.m. – ASH Experience Youth Sports Challenge
Youth, ages 10-18, will try their hand at football pass, punt and kick; tire-run drills, target football practice and lacrosse distance shooting. The WNBA’s Detroit Shock will also host a basketball clinic featuring Hot Shot and Free Throw challenges. ASH coaches will lead activities along with area coaches, including: Al Fracassa, Brother Rice; Mike Boyd, Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes; Tony Patritto, Rochester Adams; and Calvin Gross, Rochester Stoney Creek, just to name a few.

Holtz, Forzano and McInerney will walk through the events from 6:00-6:20 p.m. Events are located on ASH athletic fields. Great photo/video opportunities are available.

Moderated by Don Shane, Sports Director, WXYZ-TV.  Lou Holtz will also receive the Academy of the Sacred Heart’s Leaders of Conscience Award. A fund for the Academy’s After School Learning Center will be awarded in Holtz’s name as well.
