Robin Luce Herrmann, an attorney and shareholder at Butzel Long’s Bloomfield Hills office, has been named to a team designed to educate the public about the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).

The team is funded by a grant of $18,020, awarded by the Community Foundation to Michigan Community Resources and the Detroit Free Press. The grant will allow both groups to share their expertise during a series of in-person sessions.

As general counsel of the Michigan Press Association, Herrmann has traveled the state and educated journalists on the act and its applications. Herrmann is director emeritus of Michigan Community Resources.

“Accessing information through FOIA is not a seamless process,” says Herrmann.  “Together with Michigan Community Resources and the Detroit Free Press, we have a tremendous opportunity to educate the public on FOIA.”

Herrmann concentrates her practice on media law, commercial litigation, and civil rights. She is head of Butzel Long’s media team and conducts pre-publication review of stories and broadcasts. She also responds to subpoenas seeking information from the press and newsgatherers. The media team’s clients include those in digital media, emerging technology groups, and digital businesses that need advice on First Amendment issues, data protection, and cybercrimes.

With trial and appellate experience in both state and federal courts, Herrmann was a professor at Oakland University and is a speaker and presenter. She also served as co-editor and contributing editor of The Developing Labor Law.

Herrmann is a member of the State Bar of Michigan and has served in leadership positions with the organization. She has co-authored articles and held leadership positions with the Media Law Resource Center and other law-based organizations. She earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan and her law degree from the Detroit College of Law.
