ROYAL OAK — Motor City AutoSpa opened for business 4 years ago in a renovated building in Royal Oak. As Matt Lifter, owner celebrates his anniversary as a successful small business owner, he recently reflected on the challenges and experiences that have contributed to Motor City AutoSpa becoming the premier auto detailing business in southeastern Michigan.
Matt recalls the sharp learning curve he faced in hiring the quality staff he needed to meet his high standards. It was important to Matt that each and every car that left his business be detailed to the max. Quality control was job #1 from the first day. He takes pride in the fact that this is still his #l priority.
Accounts payable, payroll, ordering supplies, insurance, taxes, building maintenance, landscaping upkeep, marketing, employee training and motivation have all been addressed and are continuously being tweaked as the business grows.
On a humorous note, Matt reflects on the atypical issues that owners presented to him to “fix” in their vehicles interior details. The dog that became car sick during a long trip and “redecorated” the upholstery of his owners’ Lexus. There was also a Mercedes owner who had spilled a gallon of milk in the trunk during the heat wave this past summer and noticed an “unusual” odor. To put it simply, there isn’t a situation that Matt now feels he cannot remedy for a distraught owner.
The use of state of the art products to enhance the shine of classic cars, as well as the excellent results achieved in using the new eco friendly clear coats has proved to be one of Matt’s specialties. Many owners come to pick up their cars and truly cannot believe it is the same car they dropped off that morning.

Motor City AutoSpa has become successful and continues to grow based on an old philosophy that has disappeared from many businesses…the customer must be pleased with the end result. Each vehicle is inspected, with the customer, when it is picked up to make sure there is total satisfaction with the end result. This practice has resulted in Motor City AutoSpa gaining more and more customers every week simply through “word of mouth” referrals from his current customers.
As Matt begins his 5th year of operation he has plans to purchase new, state of the art equipment to enhance his ability to serve more customers on a daily basis. Motor City AutoSpa is now an established, successful business that hopes to continue to grow and serve its customers.
