Warren-based Art Van Furniture has purchased Bloomfield Hills-based Hillside Contemporary Furniture and its real estate from its founder and owner Bruce Selik. Terms of the agreement were not released.
In business for nearly 45 years, the 46,000 square-foot Hillside store, located at 2300 S Telegraph Rd., will continue to operate under the Hillside name as the newest addition to Art Van Furniture’s umbrella of brands.
“Hillside Furniture has been one of metro Detroit’s most respected names in contemporary home furnishings for many years,” says Art Van Elslander, founder and chairman of Art Van Furniture. “This acquisition is a wonderful opportunity for us to serve new customers, and we’re honored to be entrusted with the brand Bruce has worked so hard to build.”
Art Van Furniture plans to hire all of Hillside’s associates, and Selik’s son, Jeff Selik, who will serve as the general manager of the business. The store will continue to feature contemporary furnishings for the living room, dining room, entertainment, bedroom, home office, accessories and lighting. Art Van Furniture will also introduce its Art Van PureSleep Mattress Gallery to the Hillside Furniture location.
“We were drawn to Art Van Furniture largely because of its reputation as an iconic furniture retailer and corporate steward throughout the Midwest, and I am confident our customers are in the best hands,” says Bruce Selik. “They will continue to find the exclusive contemporary furniture in our store that they have been accustomed to throughout the years.”
Art Van Furniture operates 56 furniture showrooms throughout Michigan, Indiana, Ohio and Illinois, and has 41 free standing Art Van PureSleep mattress stores. The retailer also operates Art Van Flooring and Scott Shuptrine Interiors.
