    With over three decades of experience, Dr. David Chengelis, general surgeon, president and founder of Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery P.C. in Royal Oak, Michigan, is a leader in laparoscopic and robotic surgery practicing at Beaumont Health serving the greater Detroit metro area with excellence.

    Dr. Chengelis is one of the leading bariatric surgeons in the state performing both vertical sleeve gastrectomy and RNY gastric bypass with the latest techniques. He also offers minimally invasive surgery to repair hernias, remove gallbladders, resolve gastrointestinal reflux.

    Dr. Chengelis completed his bachelor’s degree at the University of Cincinnati, graduating summa cum laude, before earning his medical degree at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. He completed residencies in both internal medicine at Indiana University and surgery at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. His practice today is solely committed to surgery and he is board certified in surgery. He completes at least 60 hours of continued medical education each year and has passed re-certification testing as required every ten years without fail to maintain board certification.

    Dr. Chengelis is a member of several medical organizations, including the Michigan State Medical Society, American College of Surgeons, the American Society of Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, and currently the president of the Michigan Bariatric Society which is the state chapter of the ASMBS. He is on the faculty of the William Beaumont Oakland University School of Medicine serving as an active educator of surgical residents and medical students. He also proctors other surgeons in the use of robotic surgery throughout the state. He has published in numerous scientific journals in the disciplines of bariatric surgery, general and vascular surgery and presented in scientific meetings.

    Dr. Chengelis believes strongly in helping those less fortunate and has used his own resources to travel on multiple occasions to Asia and South America on surgical mission trips providing free surgery to dozens of indigent people in true need. In addition, in regards to US health care, he has been politically active on national committees, traveling several times to Washington DC to lobby on Capitol Hill to improve access to health care.
