The home operates as a bed and breakfast and has 10 fireplaces, 2 sunrooms, a grand dining room, a ballroom, and a private pub. It hosts a large collection of arts and antiques, including a Pewabic-tile fireplace and original painted glass work dating back to 1850.
According to Hour Detroit, the inn is “Undeniably large at some 16,000 square feet, the stucco and timber historic mansion was built in 1902 for Frederick K. Stearns, a pharmaceutical magnate and a key player in the city’s turn-of-the-century cultural scene.
“Active with the Detroit Orchestral Association (later renamed the Detroit Symphony Orchestra) and the Detroit Museum of Art (now the Detroit Institute of Arts), Stearns also donated more than 900 vintage musical instruments from around the world to the University of Michigan, thus providing the foundation for the institution’s respected Stearns Collection.
Rachel Mitchell, president and innkeeper, says the original roof needs to be replaced, along with renovating certain areas of the historic building.
