Chip Caddie is a portable, camera-based golf chipping simulator launched last year by Christian Meeks and Tim Diamond in Beverly Hills. A putting simulator is scheduled to be unveiled later this year. Both are designed to be used indoors with real golf balls — as long as they are red.
Diamond is a computer hardware and software engineer, as well as an avid golfer. In 2020, his family moved back to Michigan after living in California’s Silicon Valley for five years. Their new home had a spare garage that wasn’t big enough for a full-swing golf simulator.
“I quickly realized that you’ll never hit a full swing shot in 90 percent of homes or apartments,” Diamond says. “But I realized that while you can’t do a full swing, about half of golf and half your score are from shots where your club never goes much above your knee line — chipping and putting.”
So, he built a chipping simulator.
“It quickly became my favorite spot to spend time with friends,” Diamond says.
Diamond and Meeks, who focuses on marketing, spent most of 2023 rolling out the unit to around 20 beta testers around the country, gathering feedback, fixing bugs, figuring out packaging, and building out a fulfillment workflow.
“Our first holiday season was a huge success, and we have been incredibly happy with customer feedback so far,” Diamond says. “Users are emailing and reaching out every day telling us Chip Caddie is becoming a daily staple in their routine and has improved their short game.”
This May, the pair is planning to launch the Putt Caddie, a putting simulator that requires an iPhone and an app download.
Further investment will allow Chip Caddie to develop an online multiplayer game, and introduce new courses and in-game content. The developers also plan to attend trade shows to get the product in the hands of more golfers.
