Tombstone Brewery in Chesterfield Township, founded in 2023 by Francis Smith, is expanding with the help of a $5,000 grant from the Velocity’s Small Business Accelerator in Sterling Heights.
Smith, a former police officer and movie and television industry armorer, began home brewing nearly 40 years ago. His passion for brewing began as a hobby to serve friends and family, and to cut costs during deer hunting trips. His first brew was aptly named Blood Traill Ale.
Smith plans to use the Velocity grant to purchase an additional fermenter, which will increase and accelerate beer production. He also intends to begin distributing Tombstone beers to local restaurants and beyond.
“We’re incredibly grateful to Velocity for their support and for recognizing the potential of new small businesses like ours,” says Smith. “The $5,000 grant and the guidance we’ve received through their small business program will allow us to purchase new equipment and ramp up production of our award-winning beers. This support is helping us take the next big step, bringing Tombstone brews to more people.”
Two months after Tombstone Brewery was launched in October 2023, it was named Best New Brewery in MI Brew Trail Magazine’s 2023 Best of the Best. In 2024, the publication honored Tombstone for Best Beer Selection, Best Brewery Patio, and Most Dog-Friendly Brewery. Four of its original beers also won individual accolades.
