Founded in 2022 and working out of Newlab Detroit at Michigan Central, Grounded is a team made up of engineers, designers, and ex-founders working to design and manufacture all-electric battery electric recreational vehicles.
From working out of a heated tent, Grounded has expanded to occupy its own 13,000-square-foot dedicated manufacturing space for its camper vans and work vans. The new space is located a few minutes down the road from Newlab.
“We are going to become a global outdoor technology brand with a portfolio of hardware products that make living and working in the outdoors more sustainable, and (we) will have built up an RV manufacturing industry within Detroit,” says Sam Shapiro, co-founder of Grounded.
The latest design of its G2 vehicle features the ability to be charged at more than 26,000 Tesla Superchargers in the U.S., monochrome interior features, a new RGB lighting system, an upgraded plumbing system.
Grounded also is building what it calls the T1 Electric Trike, a three-wheeled electric bike that pulls a small (280-cubic-foot) camping trailer. Features include roof-mounted solar panels, a seating area that transforms into a bed, and a kitchenette with an induction stove, fridge, and sink. A dry-flush toilet and outdoor shower are optional.
