Eye Care for Detroit, a nonprofit dedicated to providing access to high-quality, affordable eye care for Detroit’s approximately 40,000 homebound residents, has launched a walk-in vision center on the city’s west side, along with a mobile unit.
Eye Care for Detroit recently opened the city’s first ever walk-in vision clinic at 7800 W. Outer Drive (Suite 150). The clinic is serving local residents and patients from across metro Detroit through a transportation assistance program.
The College Park Vision Center offers walk-in appointments, full-service eye care, and a modern eyewear boutique glasses in a senior-friendly facility.
In addition, a mobile eye care clinic has hit the streets, fully equipped to enable participating optometrists and ophthalmologists to perform routine exams and services on site at people’s homes.
“We are ready to serve 200-plus patients monthly through our clinic and mobile unit, bringing vision care directly to those who need it most by eliminating mobility challenges and mitigating other challenging factors,” says Cleamon Moorer, founder of Eye Care for Detroit.
Moorer, whose own eyesight was restored through an act of kindness when he was a young adult, worked throughout the pandemic to provide care to thousands of homebound patients in and around the city. He founded Eye Care for Detroit in 2022 when he discovered the city’s lack of resources, information, insurance coverage, and awareness surrounding eye care.
“Addressing this critical issue will help alleviate and prevent blindness and eye disease among Detroit residents,” Moorer says. “We are grateful to our sponsors, supporters, donors, participating physicians, and all who are working alongside us to help bridge this gap. Together we are forging a clear path toward a future where no Detroiter is left behind in the pursuit of optimal eye health.”
