Mothers and children across Maui in need of health care are benefitting from Hawaii’s first fully electric mobile medical clinic, built by Detroit-based electric vehicle startup Grounded.

The mobile clinic arrived in Maui on May 9 to the staff at Healthy Mothers Healthy Babies (HMHB) Coalition of Hawaii, a nonprofit working to improve equitable access to maternal and child health for thousands of women, children, and families. The clinic went into use after a launch event and blessing May 30.

The new medical clinic enables certified midwives, family nurse practitioners, and other specialists to bring services to communities outside of a hospital or office setting 24 hours a day.

“We work to fill gaps in the community when our community health center partners cannot get to a mom, and we want to do that in an environmentally friendly way,” says Sunny Chen, executive director of HMHB. “Grounded was able to offer us a next-generation custom build using sustainable materials and deliver it within weeks of our order. This new clinic will allow us to provide services outside of a hospital and serve our clients wherever they are.”

The new mobile clinic is equipped with an intake area, a height-adjustable bed for exams, a kitchenette and toilet, storage, and refrigerators and freezers to store vaccines.

A rooftop solar power panel can generate 8kWh of power on a sunny day, enough to fully power air conditioning all day without drawing from the vehicle battery.

A $50,000 nonprofit discount from Grounded provided HMHB with a custom build at an attainable price point in an industry where mobile medical clinics can easily cost as much as $375,000.

“Grounded’s proprietary modular system offers a library of components that can be swiftly configured in more than 100 ways to meet the needs of clients across many health care verticals,” says Sam Shapiro, CEO of Grounded. “We are about to begin manufacturing a micro-fleet of mobile dental clinics and look forward to continuing to extend sustainable healthcare access to those who need it most.”

Grounded was founded in 2022 by a group of former Tesla and SpaceX engineers. It creates vehicles and technology to give people the freedom and self-reliance to live, work, and explore anywhere, sustainably integrated with nature. The company manufactures the G2 in Newlab’s Michigan Central Mobility Studio in Detroit.
